![]() The LEADER Flevoland area covers the larger part of the province of Flevoland, i.e. Noordoostpolder and Oostelijk Flevoland, with the exception of the urban area of Lelystad. Noordoostpolder (48,000 ha) was reclaimed in 1942 for agricultural purposes. The businesses, concentrating mainly on arable farming, were given a business size of 12 ha or a multiple of this, up to 48 ha with an average of 20 ha. Farmers could register and were selected for, among other things, their enterprising character. After selection, a business could be leased from the State. The spatial organisation of the area was based on a principal nucleus, Emmeloord, surrounded by ten smaller nuclei. The former islands of Urk and Schokland were incorporated in the new land. In 1998, Noordoostpolder had a population of 41,600. Oostelijk Flevoland (54,000 ha) was reclaimed in 1957. It was decided to establish a regional centre, Dronten, with two smaller supporting nuclei at some distance, for the agricultural businesses, which were of a considerably larger size (40 ha on average). In 1998, the municipality of Dronten had a population of 32,800. The LEADER region covers an area of c. 100,000 ha, which is approximately 70% of the rural area of the province of Flevoland. The LEADER region has c. 82,000 inhabitants, which is about 32% of the total population of the province. |
