The LEADER region of Lauwersland covers the municipalities of Dantumadeel, Dongeradeel, Ferwerderadeel and Kollumerland and the surrounding area in the Province of Fryslân and the municipalities of De Marne, Winsum and Zuidhorn in the Province of Groningen. Lauwersland is a rural area with many small nuclei, but without an urban nucleus. Agriculture has always been the most important economic factor. Other economic activities usually take place on a small-scale basis. Thanks to the high natural values of Lauwersmeer and the small nuclei that are interesting from a cultural-historical point of view, there has been a steady growth in the number of tourists. Lauwersland covered an area of 856 km² and had 108,233 inhabitants in 1996, which means an average of 126 inhabitants per m². The average for the Netherlands is 449. 28% of the inhabitants are under the age of 20, 56% are between twenty and sixty, and 16% are older than 60.
