Northwest Friesland

The LEADER region of Northwest Friesland covers the municipalities of Het Bildt, Bolsward, Franeker, Harlingen, Littenseradiel and Wûnseradiel in the http://www.fryslan.com/ (Friesland). It is a rural area where the agricultural sector is strongly represented. The many small villages are characteristic of this old cultural landscape. In addition, there are the old cities with their well-preserved rich history. The western Netherlands can easily be reached via the Afsluitdijk dam. Moreover, there are links between the harbour town of Harlingen and the West Frisian Islands Terschelling and Vlieland. The old cities, the special nature of the rural areas and the links with the islands make Northwest Friesland of interest to visiting tourists. The region covers an area of 5187 km² and had 76,965 inhabitants in 1996, i.e. 148 inhabitants per km². The average for the Netherlands is 449. 27% of the inhabitants were under the age of twenty, 56% were between twenty and sixty, and 17% were over 60.
