Leader Southwest Drenthe

The LEADER region of Southwest Drenthe is within the so-called objective-5b region of the province of Drenthe, and covers the area of the following old Southwest Drenthe municipalities: Beilen, Diever, Dwingelo, Havelte, Nijeveen, Ruinen, Ruinerwold, Vledder, Westerbork, De Wijk and Zuidwolde. Following the redrawing of the municipal boundaries, this region now covers the municipalities of De Wolden, Westerveld and Middenveld, and part of the municipalities of Meppel and Hoogeveen. The area has a very attractive landscape. Small-scale and more large-scale cultural landscapes are alternated with wood, heather and wildlife areas. Partly because of this, there are a large number of tourist facilities. The LEADER region is within easy reach of Randstad, the built-up area in the western Netherlands. The LEADER region covers an area of 885 km². On 1 January 1993 it had a population of 67,600. This is 15% of the total population of Drenthe. The average population density is relatively low: 76 people per km². The average for the Netherlands is 449 people per km².
